Spiritual Warfare Prayer Points

To understand what spiritual warfare is all about, let's first acknowledge that we're in a spiritual conflict. Spiritual warfare refers to the ongoing, invisible battle between forces of good and evil in the spiritual realm. In Christianity, spiritual warfare is often described as a struggle against the forces of darkness, sin, and the devil. The Bible teaches that believers are engaged in this battle, not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces (Ephesians 6:12). The Apostle Paul, in Ephesians 6:10-18, provides a metaphorical depiction of spiritual armor that believers should put on to stand firm against these spiritual adversaries. As Christians, we face some form of spiritual battle every day. In spiritual warfare, just like in regular battles, we're dealing with different situations, reasons, and levels of intensity. Even though we can't physically see the one causing the trouble, these spiritual battles are real. The key is to educate ourselves on how these battles happen and how they affect our daily lives. We need to ask ourselves, "Why should we bother with spiritual warfare?" It's not helpful to learn about the battle if we don't see a reason to fight. Just like how war is a controversial topic in the physical world, our attitudes and beliefs about it transfer over to the spiritual realm. Regardless of our opinion, there's a spiritual battle happening whether we like it or not. In this realm, we're either winners or losers, and Jesus has already won the war in the heavens. Overall, spiritual warfare involves the ongoing struggle between good and evil forces in the spiritual dimension, impacting the lives of believers and influencing the course of their spiritual journeys as well as their physical journeys. In Luke 10:19, Jesus said, " Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you." This means in Christ Jesus we have power over the enemy and we will be victorious in every battle no matter what weapon the enemy will try to form against us .

The Whole Armor of God

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the [a]wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of [b]the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints— 19 and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

Important elements of spiritual warfare include:

  1. Identification of the Enemy: Recognizing that the enemy is not other people but spiritual forces that oppose God and seek to hinder the purposes of believers.

  2. Prayer and Spiritual Disciplines: Engaging in prayer, fasting, meditation on Scripture, and other spiritual disciplines to strengthen one's relationship with God and resist spiritual attacks.

  3. Putting on the Armor of God: Following the guidance in Ephesians 6:10-18 to put on the whole armor of God, which includes the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit (which is the word of God).

  4. Renouncing Sin: Being vigilant about personal sin and actively asking the Holy Spirit to help you to resist temptations that may open doors to spiritual attacks.

  5. Spiritual Authority: Understanding and exercising the spiritual authority given to believers in the name of Jesus Christ.
